Group pushing in-home care says nursing homes cost Ohio too much

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio's Medicaid costs for senior citizens' long-term care are among the most expensive in the country, and the state's reliance on costly nursing homes can't be sustained as the number of older people swells, according to a study released Monday by a group that advocates in-home care.

Ohio ranks 49th in providing seniors with less-expensive, in-home care services, said the study commissioned by the Ohio Council for Home Care, a trade group that represents personal care aides and hospice workers. Only Mississippi's Medicaid program spends less on home care.

The $25,000 study was conducted independently by a Columbus-based research firm that examined state budget data, along with information provided by the AARP, the U.S. Census Bureau and the Kaiser Family Foundation, a Washington-based nonprofit health group.

Sac County's rural life rates No. 7 in America

Sac County is one of the best places to live in rural America, especially if you think the sound of a combine rolling through a soybean field has "a mechanical magic to it," writes Progressive Farmer magazine in its February issue.

The 650,000-circulation magazine of rural living tabbed Sac County No. 7 out of 3,500 counties in rural America based on personal economics, education, crime, health care resources, taxes and climate statistics.

"Sac County is as Iowa as Iowa gets - corn and soybeans as far as the eye can see. Cows and hogs. Clapboard farmhouses and big barns."

An abundance of farm animals and row crops might not spur hundreds to pack up the moving van and head for the county in northwest Iowa, once known for the world's largest popcorn ball on display in Sac City.
