Hillsborough development projects under way

Hillsborough has several development projects in the works. Some are approved and under way, while others are in very early stages. The projects are a mix of residential and commercial, and could add thousands of people to town. From north to south, here are the projects: 1) Habitat for Humanity is building 18 homes in the northern Fairview neighborhood. So far, one is under way, and another five homes will start in the spring. Habitat is interested in buying additional land in the neighborhood. 2) Kenion Grove is a subdivision of 55 homes between Revere Road and U.S. 70. Construction is under way. 3) Churton Grove is a 330-acre complex of 493 homes and 65,000 square feet of retail space just east of the town limits. Approximately 150 single family lots remain in the third and fourth phases of development.

MacDonald promises Baddeck a nursing home

BADDECK — The province plans to build a nursing home here by 2010, it was announced Friday.

Premier Rodney MacDonald told a gathering in Baddeck that the facility will be part of his government’s commitment, announced last week, to have an extra 832 long-term-care beds in 32 communities at a cost of $74 million.

Neither the specific site in Baddeck nor the tender release date were announced Friday, but officials confirmed the 70-bed facility will have more private rooms, a better kitchen and improved recreational areas.

"We’re not just talking about a nursing home facility but a home," Mr. MacDonald told reporters.

The new home will replace Alderwood Rest Home. A local board will soon be set up to select a building site and work out other details.

Buy-to-let ‘not to blame’ for house prices

As a result, Professor Ball said that it is not clear that house prices would have been lower without Buy to Let, as housing demand is still with us but supply is likely to have been less.

Turning to the effect of Buy to Let on tenants, Professor Ball said that it has sheltered many households from the full impact of house price rises, as renting is often a cheaper monthly-money-outgoings option.

“It enables households to build up their own equity and, although tenants do not share in capital gains directly, they do so through lower rents and lower risk. They can do this while living in good standard accommodation, as competition in the rental market is now greater. This appeals to young, mobile people in employment. Overwhelmingly these are the client base of the Buy to Let landlord."

Professor Ball pointed out that more younger people rent rather than own property compared to previous decades.

Ethica settles into new headquarters in Gray

The largest nursing care provider in Georgia will cut the ribbon to officially open its new headquarters in Gray next week.

The offices of Ethica’s corporate headquarters in Gray have been functional since the move from Macon December 15, but the official opening is scheduled for 11 a.m. January 24.

Ethica president Lucy Rogers said the city’s central location and the technology available were the key elements to the decision to locate in Gray.

Mayor Jason Briley said he is thrilled that the company chose to relocate to Gray and hopes it is just the beginning for the city.

“It’s important because this is the type of business we need to attract,” Briley commented. “I truly believe that as more businesses locate here, they will attract others to do the same. Technology and service industries are exactly what we need.”

Development Authority Chairman Greg Mullis also welcomed the headquarters and said he feels the Ethica move will have a tremendous impact on the community.
